LIN 101 Course Description
Students will understand the purpose of an operating system. They will learn to outline the key features of the Linux operating system. Ultimately they will be able to describe the origins of the Linux operating system. The common uses of Linux in industry today will be explained. Students will be able to describe common types of hardware and their features. They will be instructed how to obtain the hardware and software information necessary to install Linux.
LIN 102 Course Description
This session will teach students Linux installation using the hardware and software information previously obtained in preparing for installing Linux. This lesson presents an overview of the various components that you will use when interacting with the operating system, as well as how to enter basic shell commands, obtain help, and properly shutdown the Linux system. An understanding of the structure and commands surrounding the Linux filesystem will be explained. Students will explore the Linux filesystem hierarchy by changing the position in the filesystem tree and listing filenames of various types. Students will examine the shell wildcard metacharacters used to specify multiple filenames as well as view the contents of files using standard Linux commands. Students will learn about the regular expression metacharacters used when searching for text within files, and are introduced to the vi text editor and its equivalents.
